Austin Roofing Company, a Central Texas roofing contractor that has worked through every hail season since 2008, today published a season-by-season guide answering one of the questions homeowners ask most often: when is the best time to replace a roof. The company’s answer is right now. Fall and winter bring Austin’s steadiest weather of the year, the most open roofer schedules, and a months-long buffer before Central Texas hail season returns in March.
The guide, Austin Roofing Company’s seasonal roof replacement guide, rates each season on weather, scheduling and how well new shingles seal. Fall rates best overall, with the mild days and warm afternoons that shingles need to bond, and by October most of the spring and summer storm claims are settled, so crews have room to schedule jobs when homeowners want them. Winter rates excellent outside of freeze days and is the quietest stretch on a roofer’s calendar. Spring is storm season: hail season runs from March through June, and the risk of damaging hail peaks in early May, according to KXAN’s analysis of Storm Prediction Center data. That is when out-of-town crews follow the hail into Austin, door-knock whole neighborhoods, and every local roofer is booked with insurance claims. Summer is workable, but spring claim work keeps schedules full and the heat is hard on crews and aging roofs alike.
“The cheapest replacement is a planned one,” said an Austin Roofing Company spokesperson. “The roof sets the price, not the month. Fall and winter don’t make shingles cheaper, but they give homeowners time: time to compare three written estimates line by line, time to arrange the money, and time to get a sealed roof on the house before the first spring hailstorm. A roof replaced before it leaks also avoids wet insulation, stained drywall and rotten decking, and that’s where the real savings are.”
The guide also takes on the most common worry about cold-weather installs. Asphalt shingles bond to each other through a strip of sealant on the back of each shingle, and GAF says that strip needs warmth, sun and temperatures above 40°F to activate. A sunny Austin afternoon in January clears that easily. On the few days that dip below 40°F, a careful roofer either moves the install to a warmer day or hand-seals the shingles with an approved asphalt cement as the manufacturer directs. The company argues that freeze events such as the February 2023 ice storm are a reason to replace, not to wait, because ice and falling limbs damage old roofs first.
On cost, the guide puts a complete architectural shingle replacement on an average Austin home of 1,800 to 2,200 square feet at $10,000 to $16,000, with roof size, material, pitch and decking condition setting the number. Rotten decking found after tear-off is the classic surprise on the final invoice, which is why Austin Roofing Company prices decking per sheet in its written estimates, photographs every replaced sheet, and never charges for it without the homeowner’s approval.
Not every roof should wait for the calendar. An active leak gets repaired or tarped the same day, and the company offers same-day emergency response, including temporary tarping, for leaks and storm damage. Fresh hail or wind damage follows the insurance claim rather than the season. And a roof at the end of its life should not go into hail season unprotected; homeowners replacing this winter can ask about Class 3 and Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, which qualify for a 10 to 28 percent Texas insurance discount. For roofs that may not need replacing at all, the company’s rule of thumb is to repair when the roof has 10 or more years left and the repair costs under $2,000 to $3,000, and to replace when the roof is near the end of its life and repairs reach 30 percent of the cost of a new one.
The guide closes with a five-step plan for a fall or winter replacement: a free, photo-documented inspection with a written report; itemized written estimates compared on tear-off, underlayment, flashing, ventilation and per-sheet decking; a decision on materials and payment, including 0% interest financing; an install booked for fall or winter, with the roofer pulling the building permit the City of Austin requires for most reroofing work; and photos of every stage before it is covered up. Most Austin homes take one to three days on site.
Austin Roofing Company offers free roof inspections across Austin and nearby communities including Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Leander, Pflugerville, Lakeway, Dripping Springs, Buda and Kyle, with 24/7 emergency service.
