Possible Films announces esteemed independent filmmaker's newest feature to premiere in New York City September 12, in Chicago September 13, and in Los Angeles September 19.

NEW YORK, Aug. 19, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- American independent filmmaker Hal Hartley's eagerly awaited new film will kick off its initial North American run on September 12 at the Roxy Cinema in New York City, Chicago's Facets Film Forum the following day, and at the Lumiere Cinema in Los Angeles on September 19.

Where to Land is a farce about a successful director of romantic comedies in his senior years who, while addressing his Last Will and Testament, applies for a job as assistant groundskeeper in a cemetery because he'd like to work outdoors with his hands. But his family, friends and neighbors misunderstand and assume he is dying, crowding into his apartment to express their last farewells and to clumsily philosophize about the meaning of life.

Early screenings have elicited enthusiastic responses: Paul F. Verhoeven of ABC Radio in Australia broadcasted this is "…peak Hal Hartley, warm and optimistic, damnedly funny and vital." In VICE Magazine's current edition, Kevin Khara insists: "In an age of brain-lacerating tech and herdlike algorithmic group-think, Hartley stands out in ever-greater contrast as a quietly intransigent auteur force."

Intransigent or not, Hartley is undoubtedly independent. Not only does he finance his latest films and the restorations of his older titles through crowdsourcing campaigns, but most of his catalogue is also available for streaming directly from halhartley.com via its Vimeo channel. His company, Possible Films, is the worldwide sales and booking agent for most of his thirteen features and numerous shorter works. Hartley has received festival prizes at Berlin (Ned Rifle, 2015), Prague (Meanwhile, 2013), Cannes (Henry Fool, 1998), Tokyo (Amateur, 1994), Sundance (Trust, 1990) and many more.

The film features actors long associated with Hartley's films such as Bill Sage, Robert John Burke and Edie Falco. The supporting cast includes Joe Perrino, Gia Crovatin, and Obie Award winner Kathleen Chalfant while introducing newcomers Kim Taff, Katelyn Sparks, Jeremy Hendrik, Jay Lenox and Aida Johannes.
