Book shares their experience from their swearing-in ceremony through their intense combat situations in Vietnam, and the struggles they faced upon returning home
NORTH BRANCH, Minn., April 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- On June 28, 1967, a group of 150 young men and women, were sworn into the Marine Corps at a Minnesota Twins baseball game. Author Christy Sauro Jr. was one of those one of those young men. They were dubbed the "Twins Platoon," and an updated edition of his book tells the story of what happened after they were cheered off the ball field.
In "The Legacy of the Twins Platoon," Sauro expands on his original publication of the book almost 20 years ago. That version was even turned into an award-winning television special entitled "Spotlight on the Twins Platoon." Throughout the years following the initial release of the book, Sauro received much interest in a longer version of the book that included the fate of other members of the platoon.
"In 1984, the thought came to me to write a book about what happened to the Twins Platoon," said Sauro. "Later, in 1990, I began to work on a written account, for about forty hours a week for fifteen years. I spent more than seventeen thousand hours working to complete the manuscript."
In addition to the true-life stories of Marines who served in Vietnam, the new book includes forewords from decorated military leaders, a former Minnesota governor, a historian and an Emmy-award winning producer. It also includes an extensive bibliography that cites all Sauro's sources, and several pages of photos. The book is divided into three parts: Before Vietnam, In Vietnam, and "After Vietnam.
"The story of the Twins Platoon is historic and timeless," said Sauro. "Though many have passed, their true-life stories are worthy of preservation, providing valuable insights about the Vietnam War and the lifetime effects that war can have on our veterans and their families. Their stories help to remind us how important it is that our country stand behind and support our men and women in uniform, so they know their military service is appreciated."
